March 19th, 2006

It's Sunday March 19th, 2006. SXSW sucks. Not the event itself, which I can't really pass judgement on from the couch in my living room, but the effect it has on music news. While this week had a few neat stories (The Hold Steady signed to Vagrant? New Lillingtons record?) it seemed for the most part the world stopped spinning. The ratio of user submitted news to stuff we dig up ourselves fluctuates week by week, but in the past few days I think we were scrounging for table scraps more often than not. Things should pick up soon though, because Texas was most certainly the reason for this drought…

Stories you were talking about this week

So it wasn't exactly for the most dangerous of crimes, but Less Than Jake's guitarist Chris was arrested while shooting their new video in a mall and you all seemed to have a comment. Similarly quite a few of you jumped into the debate on MSNBC and the New York Times' efforts to define the "emo" movement. The Lawrence Arms remained atop the news pile this week with their new video hitting the interweb (that and a certain interview you'll read more about below). While their new television show is geared towards pre-schoolers, the Aquabats seem to have amassed quite a buzz among the Punknews commenters as well. Not sure what that says about us, mind you. Fearless continues their collection of "Punk Goes" covers compilations with the 90's edition, proving the nostalgia cycle is moving way too quick these days. From First To Last's media blitz was in full force this week, as they released both album streams and a new video from Heroine. The perpetually troubled Lollapalooza refuses to die, returning once again this year with a number of acts including Sparta, Cursive, Sleater-Kinney, the Hold Steady and many more. Finally a tour featuring Paint It Black, the Loved Ones and Shook Ones seemed to turn some heads.

This week we posted the second part of a video interview with Brendan Kelly of the Lawrence Arms. Check it out.

It's Sunday March 12th, 2006. See this thing? Awesome. Bow to the new sasquatch lobster, which mightily grasps at the soul of man with its glorious woolly claw. If any of you start a hardcore band called Kiwa Hirsuta I promise we'll give you a totally undeserving amount of coverage here.

Stories you were talking about this week

While I can guarantee you we'll still be announcing Warped Tour bands for months to come, the major lineup for the annual punk rock summer camp was announced this week. Charges were dropped against the student involved in the surreal This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb bike scare fiasco. Another Victory hardcore band parted ways with their vocalist as Scott Wade left Winnipeg's Comeback Kid. With each new Anti-Flag track comes a flurry of attention and this week's release in support of the After Downing Street Coalition was no different. Vendetta Red called it quits and their breakup announcement brought out the usual throng of eulogizing supporters and venomous detractors. Finally a new batch of bands including AFI, the Riverboat Gamblers and Alexisonfire were added to the forthcoming Bamboozle festival.

This week we posted the first part of a video interview with Brendan Kelly of the Lawrence Arms. Check it out.

It's Sunday March 5th, 2006. And the Oscar for greatest use of a flaming dumpster by a punker with a giant Conflict patch draped over his ass during a riot goes to…

Stories you were talking about this week

This was one of those weeks where we had more than a few huge punk news stories that weren't directly tied to the usual cycle of tours and new song releases. Yesterday a riot broke out during the GBH / Adicts headlined British Invasion 2k6 show. Earlier in the week a student was charged after a This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb sticker caused a bomb scare. Not many bands ever have the good fortune to be in this sort of situation, but Hawthorne Heights went to great lengths to convince fans to give their album that extra nudge to the top of the Billboard charts. The band was also among many to campaign for the controversial animal rights organization PETA. The usual suspects of course reared their heads this week, as the announcement of Warped Tour dates and upcoming releases from Anti-Flag, Less Than Jake, Rise Against and Bad Religion all took their share of attention. Some new additions to that cast included Slayer and Against All Authority, both of who have new releases in the wings.

This week we posted an interview with instrumental Springman act Tera Melos. Check it out.

Looks for headlines in March when acts like Bright Eyes, Chuck D and Michael Stipe appear at the Bring 'Em Home Now event in New York. Joining a long list of ridiculous border incidents faced by North American bands, Further Seems Forever managed to get themselves blacklisted from Canada. Epitaph signed a pair of bands, including hip hop act Busdriver and post-Hot Water Music project The Draft. New songs that had you talking this week included the first track released by Punknews Records act Ryan's Hope, new demos from the good sir Ted Leo, and music from the upcoming Less Than Jake release. Other big stories this week included the upcoming release from Good Riddance and the upcoming tour featuring Teenage Bottlerocket, the Epoxies and the Phenomenauts.

This week we posted the second half of the joint Punknews / Pastepunk interview with Dr. Dan Yemin of Lifetime. We also bid farewell to Brent Dowe of pioneering rocksteady act the Melodians.

It's Sunday February 19th, 2006. This was a hard article to write, as last week we really missed the chance to use one of those great Dick Cheney hunting pictures and it just seems too late to open with one now. I just don't know what to do. Here's some pictures of the bird flu scare that hit Iraq the other day. I'm sure there's something clever to say about it, but I'll leave that to you folks.

Stories you were talking about this week

He usually targets the major label world, but this week Victory head Tony Brummel turned his guns on Apple's iTunes music store. Was he promoting the album as an art form, defending his business model or on the wrong side of the digital divide? You all had something to say about it. A number of anticipated new songs surfaced this week, including cuts from NOFX's new EP, Anti-Flag's major label debut and Less Than Jake's next. It's raising money for a great cause, but there's really something weird about My Chemical Romance selling a custom blazer. Speaking of weird, the kid-friendly version of Devo fit's that label well. Other hot topics included a Bad Religion DVD trailer, Paint It Black's upcoming performances and as always more additions to the Warped Tour.

Although most of you seemed to debate Propagandhi in the comment section, we published a huge interview from Boy Sets Fire this week. We also spoke with the Fall of Troy and launched the first half of the joint Pastepunk / Punknews interview with Dan Yemin of Lifetime, Paint It Black, Kid Dynamite and Armalite.

Another upcoming record with a huge profile `round these parts is of course the Lawrence Arms' Oh! Calcutta!, new music form which was released online recently. The Lookout fallout continued this week as the good Sir Ted Leo parted for greener pastures at indie powerhouse Touch and Go. Tour plans from bands like Against Me! and Bigwig had anticipation running high, as did the rare announcement of upcoming Rancid performances. This week also saw the A Wilhelm Scream minus a bassist, Green Day getting its industry accolades at the Grammys and Dischord distributing DVDs of that crazy Pancake Mountain kids show.

Stories you were talking about this week

Anti-Flag made some waves this week with the first preview of a song from their major label debut For Blood and Empire. Bad Religion's Greg Graffin is in the studio recording a solo project backed by the the Weakerthans, featuring a guest appearance by Jolie Holland, and produced by Brett Gurewitz -- a combination of players that raised a collective "holy crap" from the `Org staff when we learned. I guess you can go home again, as Vagrant signed Saves The Day, again. None More Black finished their new record while Green Day just got started thinking about theirs. Other big stories this week spanned such topics as the With Honor vocalist change, the surprise appearance of a Silverstein song on American Idol, the break up of Champion, and details on the new Less than Jake EP.

This was a tragic week as well, and our condolences go out to the families, friends and fans of both Jason Sears of RKL and Thomas "Pig Champion" Roberts of Poison Idea.

Well it seems that a few weeks of time hasn't let cooler heads prevail when it comes to Against Me!, as our recent interview with the band brought everyone out for another round of sparring. Industry politics once again sucked some of the fun out of life, as independent labels railed against Best Buy's pricing and Nettwerk took a stand against the RIAA. Other topics of interest included Bright Eyes special special recognition from GLAAD, the recently announced Alkaline Trio / Against Me! tour, the new single from the Loved Ones and Nitro's new deal with Much The Same. Two upcoming festivals announced their line ups this week, and both the International Ska Circus and the Bamboozle turned some heads.

Well once again a break up of a divisive band had the most attention, and our announcement of the demise of the Transplants was this week's top story. The new NOFX EP, cover art in particular, managed to turn some heads. Once again the Warped Tour was a hot topic with news on the addition of Aiden and Joan Jett of all people as well as further comments from tour head Kevin Lyman. Detail on the upcoming albums from Yellowcard, the Lawrence Arms and the Bronx all had their share of attention, as well as topics like Against Me!'s upcoming benefit show and Sony Music's new label for GLBT.

Oh, and apparently Brian's not very hip on the list of (discriminatory) punk bands and let a questionable article slip. Sorry about that one folks, it's been removed and we certainly don't tolerate that kind of stuff `round these parts.

Fat Wreck claimed both top spots this week with stories on their new signing Dead To Me and the upcoming NOFX EP Never Trust a Hippy. As usual, the Warped tour got a ton of attention with new band announcements (the Bouncing Souls, Armor For Sleep and Billy Talent if you were wondering). Mest broke up. `Nuff said. Upcoming records from AFI, Streetlight Manifesto, the Lawrence Arms and Anti-Flag all had their fair share of attention, both positive and negative. Strangely, an account that Ian MacKaye was speaking at Yale received quite a reaction as well.
