Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Other than Roger from Less Than Jake's notorious drug dealing, what are your favorite punk rock day jobs?

A: I think the most common day job is some sort of restaurant job, simply because it lends itself to touring life. But I'd say the best day job is the carpenter (a trade I know is practiced by Mike Hale and Chuck Ragan). There's something both inherently masculine and independent about carpentry. You have a skill that involves working with your hands and you're able to hire yourself out as available.
You're not out selling soda to kids, or going over orders for some large client or some other bean counter job (to be clear, the only jobs I've had as an adult are white collar, bean counter jobs), you're going out and building something. A house, a desk, a table anything. That's pretty damn impressive, from an outsider standpoint but maybe I'm just romanticizing about Chuck Ragan making me a desk…shirtless.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Can punknews do some top lists? I know you do the end of the year lists so I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about maybe best albums of certain genres and songs and stuff like that. I would rather have your editors' opinions vs using another site's.

A: Probably not. We've discussed it before and it seems like many of those lists are A) very narrow in their scope B) Controversial and C) Simply designed to get people to look at the site and not really to do anything progressive.

Additionally, they lead to a slippery slope of journalism in the sense of, "Well we don't have any real big news…Let's post the 'Top 10 Crust guitarist' list! That'll drum up some interest." I'm thrilled you respect our editorial staff enough to have interest in a list we would curate but we respect our readers enough to let them make their own, informed decisions without our ignorant input.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Do you think a main stream band that is not really punk rock, along the lines of System of a Down, will ever be number 1# for a top list at punknews? Do you think that people are too hip and want to pick a band that they just heard about?

A: System of A Down's "Toxicity" was the #1 album of the year for Punknews. I think it was 2003 maybe. Also Brand New's major label debut (which wasn't really punk) was number 1.

I understand why you might think we wouldn't pick a mainstream artist given recent year's selections but for the editorial staff, it is much more about the music than the label or level of popularity. We all have different tastes, Adam White loves Neil Young, I have a soft spot for pop music, I'm pretty sure Kira listens to nothing but powerviolence (okay, I can't confirm that). The point is, that we always try to rate music based on merit and not if it fits the definition of "punk rock". Hopefully we can maintain that low standard we've set.
