Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: If people debate about who started punk and the Ramones had their song "Judy Is A Punk" in 1974 and there's CBGB video evidence like there is on YouTube and they play so much faster than the Sex Pistols why isn't the argument ended? A: Blah blah everyone's definition of punk is different. THIS IS OKAY. One could perhaps go back even farther, to bands like MC5, Stooges, etc. but what would the point be? The answer doesn't have to be so goddamn definitive.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: How come more punks don't follow 1977 punk rock credentials? The shortness and burst of the songs/fashion/pissed off attitude? I wasnt there in '77 but it's where the truth lays & where the sun sets at the end of the day. Respect it/don't forget it imho. A: Well aside from my personal conflict with the term, "Punk rock credentials," there's no true sound/attitude. Look at The Sex Pistols. "Never Mind the Bollocks" had more songs over 3minutes than under, a length that would probably be long even by modern punk style. As for the rest, it's a need to evolve and change. You can express outrage while taking a more mature, or thought out, route than a middle finger and leather jacket. That isn't to say that image or attitude didn't have its place in time but it doesn't mean it needs to be continued today. Part of respecting something is knowing when and why it was important. It would probably be more disrespectful to attempt to live that memory today, than to remember it in its time and place. But that's just my thought.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Did you go to a record store on Record Store Day this year? A: Nope. I don't know if any of the editors did. I like the concept but the execution has becoming increasingly annoying. Last year I went to get the two Joe Strummer LP's and I ended up having to stand in a single file line that led to a table where all the Record Store Day releases were. You would then ask an employee if they had the release you were looking for and they would dig through a box and let you know. That's not record shopping. It didn't help that after RSD a bunch more copies of those LPs were made available online. This year I skipped the rush and only bought two records online. There wasn't much "exclusive" that I was into and it just seems to be becoming an event for major labels to piggyback on for free promotion (I love Lady Gaga but does she need a RSD 12", really?). I'll support my local store the other 364 days out of the year.
