Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Why is the "punk" community so concerned with the label/ term "punk", and in turn less willing to be artistically critical of anything that falls within this label? It just encourages mediocrity. Oui? Non? A: I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I couldn't care less about labels and terms when it comes to music or communities. Most people, I think, are the same. Folks like what they like and dislike what they dislike; any person that isn't completely full of shit lives by this mantra. As far as encouraging mediocrity, at its core that's nothing more than an opinion regarding the music itself. If you don't like it, listen to something else. No one's putting a gun to your head. -Bryne

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: What bands do you like that you refuse to see live because you can't stand most of their fanbase that shows up? This is why I won't go see Dropkick, Flogging Molly, Gaslight, etc. A: I don't think there's a band I would "refuse" to see live because of their fanbase. I can say there are bands where that factors in.

Take Gaslight Anthem. Seeing them at the Fest 6 at Market St. Pub was amazing. Everyone was super friendly and energetic and it was a blast. Now, their most recent stop through the Bay Area was at a free "Music in the Park" sponsored by a local radio station. These events attract a few thousand people and are filled with people who care less about the band than about getting free radio "shwag". It's annoying to say the least. It was not the reason I didn't go but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a factor.

Truth be told, I do enjoy going to some shows specifically because the band has grown and now has a broader fan base. It's why I hope Weezer does a Blue album tour, so I can see jaded punks and poppy tweens collide. -Rich

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Who's the nicest guy in punk? A:Good question! I can't say who is the "nicest" as I haven't met all of them but there are some people who were startlingly nice when I first met them. Mike Park is (of course) infamous for how nice he is. Joe Sibb is amazingly nice and gracious. Vinnie of Less than Jake and Paper and Plastick donated a ton of rare records to the Punknews Haiti Auction and then auctioned off more when The Protagonist were robbed. The guys of Andrew Jackson Jihad actually stayed way late after most of the shows I've seen so they can talk to kids and just be friendly.

The list could go on and on but there are so many amazingly nice people in punk it's mind boggling. Pretty much if they're in punk they're probably pretty friendly, because they're probably not in it for the money and fame. -Rich
