May 28th, 2006

It's Sunday May 28th, 2006. So I was enjoying the nice weather this weekend with some good ol mid-90s ska/punk and something struck me as odd. There's a lyric in "As Wicked" that goes "she said she never had a friend before / I said 'hey girl I'll be your friend but who's keepin' score'." I sat in the sun with my beer and pondered this bit of marble mouthed wisdom from my pal Tim, and it struck me: MySpace keeps score. That's who. I'm not sure why, but it bums me out.

Stories you were talking about this week

Gorilla Biscuits are reunited and ready to reclaim the road. The influential act announced dates supported by Comeback Kid this week. List making is pretty much the music nerd's favorite past time, but it's certainly odd to see the Clash and Sex Pistols appear on someone's list of the top conservative rock songs. While they announced details on their new EP, I'm willing to bet it's the new volly in their feud with Avenged Sevenfold that had you talking about the Dillinger Escape Plan this week. What a long, strange publicity campaign it's been, but PETA2's sexiest vegetarian competition has wrapped up and from its punk-heavy nominees Davey Havok is one of the winners. We got to hear new music this week from Rise Against, Bad Religion's Greg Graffin and the Bouncing Souls. This week also saw Avail hooking up with the upcoming Rancid tour, Propagandhi running for rights, and the now-usual amount of AFI pre-release details.

Also this week the music community said goodbye to legendary ska and reggae artist Desmond Dekker. Our condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.

Current contests Win a 60GB iPod, more from Taking Back Sunday / Angels and Airwaves Taking Back Sunday and Angels and Airwaves are heading out on tour this summer in support of their respective new albums. May 21st, 2006

It's Sunday May 21st, 2006. This past Friday was the Feast of St. Joey, and of course the annual Joey Ramone Birthday Bash in NYC. This year saw the likes of MC5's Wayne Kramer, the Strokes, Glen Matlock and the Philistines, Cheetah Chrome, Richie Ramone and Tommy Ramone appearing among others. That "punk rock pilgrimage" thrown by the Hungry March Band took place as well. Anyone with pictures or stories from the events feel free to share them below. RIP Joey.

Stories you were talking about this week

Just like last week, this week was dominated by the breakup of a band that was a huge part of the 90s punk scene for many of us, so farewell to Detroit's Suicide Machines. Protest music was in the news once again, with musicians like Tom Morello and Chuck D weighing in on the latest trends and PunkVoter commenting on MTV's sudden interest. There was lots of new media released this week, including three new NOFX live videos as well as exclusive streams from Angels and Airwaves and Less Than Jake. Ontario's Grade announced a reunion show while New Jersey's Lifetime continued their return with July tour dates. With the highly anticipated solo record arriving soon more details were announced on Greg Graffin's Cold As The Clay this week. Finally bassist Brent Wilson left popular act Panic At the Disco and plenty of you had something to say about it.

May 14th, 2006

It's Sunday May 14th, 2006. Sure we all knew it was coming, but it still sucks. There's maybe a reason why bands these days just announce their split as indefinite and vaguely defined hiatus. Even when something like that's widely known, the finality of a break up announcement still manages to sting.

Stories you were talking about this week

It was an amazing run, but Hot Water Music officially drew the curtain closed this week. A house bill in the U.S. seeks to ban social networking sites, including MySpace and even Punknews.org, from schools and libraries. Details on the annual Warped Tour compilation were announced this week, with the full track listing and cover art unveiled. Guitarist Dave Baksh quit popular Canadian act Sum 41 this week, leaving that band's next step in question. Tom Delonge's buzz band Angels and Airwaves posted the track "Valkyrie Missile" this week, and likewise Good Riddance also unveilved a song from My Republic. AFI's "Miss Murder" video hit the net and the band detailed MTV movie awards plans and more. Poor Suicide Machines fans are witnessing the slow implosion of that long running ska-punk act, and the last word on that story is on its way next week. Other stories that had you talking this week included a Descendents branded pair of shoes, a new Slayer EP exclusive to retailer Hot Topic, and details on the upcoming Dead To Me and Good Riddance releases.

Speaking of Hot Water Music this week we published a lengthy interview with Jason Black about the Draft. Later this week we also spoke with Victory act the Black Maria.

San Diego's Pistolita are hitting the road with Say Anything and the Bled. We just happen to have a pair of tickets to that tour's Philadelphia show on May 20th.

May 7th, 2006

It's Sunday May 7th, 2006. Rock and roll is bedridden this week. In one hemisphere we have the Keith Richards, the man that age and substance abuse cannot fell, apparently falling out of a coconut tree and ending up in brain surgury. On the other side of the world we now have word that Fats Domino was hospitalized, interrupting his apperance at the first post-Katrina New Orleans Jazz Fest. There's no word if Fats was up in a tree though, so there may not be a connection. A speedy recovery to all regardless.

Stories you were talking about this week

Fall Out Boy doesn't typically rise to the top of our news heap here, but when parents condemn one of their shows as a liberal homosexual rally it seems to get people's attention. The hype for the new Rise Against record is building, and this week saw the posting of both the album's cover art and the song "Chamber the Cartridge." The final album of new recorded material from the late, great Johnny Cash was announced this week as well. The upcoming tour featuring Lagwagon, the Lawrence Arms and A Wilhelm Scream grabbed a lot of attention, as did Fat's announcement regarding new Strike Anywhere and Against Me! releases. This week saw a new video from None More Black, the Fall of Troy hitting the breaks, a new book announcement from Greg Graffin, and more on the future of Lifetime.

It's been a long time in the works but our interview with Dead Kennedys / Alternative Tentacles Records principle Jello Biafra ran today. Definitely don't miss this one.

It's Sunday April 30th, 2006. So unless you visit the site with a text browser or a screen reader you've probably noticed a few changes today. We've got to thank you all for being such dedicated load testers, and I can assure you that what was Punknews.org 4.0 this morning is most likely Punknews.org 4.835 by this point (or maybe something catchy like Punknews Wii). Considering that the relatively minor cosmetic changes of version 3.0 seemed to really piss a few people off, the amount of good comments and constructive suggestions you've offered so far has been wonderful.

Stories you were talking about this week

You know after the goodwill we saw during their CBGBs benefit it was nice to see Gorilla Biscuits top the news pile again. This week the band announced an August U.S. tour and details on the Start Today reissue. Speaking of goodwill, the Bouncing Souls seem to be getting it in spare from our readers, and this week the band released "The Gold Song" from their upcoming record. AFI had three big stories this week, as they released details on Decemberunderground, tour plans for Japan and the UK, and U.S. shows with Dillinger Escape Plan and Nightmare of You. Not to be overshadowed, Rise Against released announced that their new record The Sufferer and the Witness is set for July. Vagrant surprised again this week by signing a reformed Lemonheads which features members of the Descendents. This week also saw a new live video from Rancid, an L.A. Weekly profile on Brett Gurewitz and plans from Anti-Flag for the May Day demonstrations.

This week we spoke with Aaron of Reel Big Fish, Roger of Less Than Jake and Keith of Every Time I Die. Oh, and did we mention the whole Punknews.org 4.0 thing? Well we kicked off this new era with a new exclusive song from the Marked Men.

Stories you were talking about this week

This was a week with plenty of controversy, but eclipsing it all was a series of leaked emails between Victory Records head Tony Brummel and Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs. Never an organization to shy away from causing their own wave, animal rights activists PETA2 launched their World's Sexiest Vegetarian competition with plenty of punk personalities involved. Propagandhi quite ungracefully opted out, mind you. Pop punk stars du jour Fall Out Boy announced recording plans for June as well as their intentions for guest stars. More info was revealed on upcoming albums from both the Bouncing Souls and Rise Against, while the latest from NOFX landed in stores. A week can't go by without some AFI attention, and the band's tour and festival appearances were announced thsi week. Thursday began streaming new music from their upcoming record in the form of "A City By the Light Divided." The Alkaline Trio meanwhile looked back and announced a reissue of their early album Goddamnit. The kids must be getting excited as Taking Back Sunday, Angels and Airwaves and Head Automatica have joined forces for a tour. Upcoming recording plans from Comeback Kid and the legendary Stooges were also revealed. Finally you all reacted to an interesting editorial on the recent "London Calling" terrorism scare.

April 16th, 2006

It's Sunday April 16th, 2006. So it finally warmed up `round these parts, and hopefully you guys got out this weekend and enjoyed it. I know tearing yourselves away from trading bad quality 25 second radio rips of "Miss Murder" was hard though. Seriously, I don't think we've had more news submissions about under a minute of audio in a long time. It sort of made the actual release of the song some two days later a tad anticlimactic, no?

Stories you were talking about this week

So… yeah… New AFI single. Was there ever a question which story would come out on top this week? It's the end of an era as Epitaph retires the venerable Punk-O-Rama series while launching its successor in the form of Unsound. Speaking of long running comps from the big `E, the next volume of Give Em the Boot was announced. NOFX is gearing up for this coming week's release of Wolves in Wolves' Clothing with a new song and new video online. Popular rock / funk act the Red Hot Chili Peppers gave punk a nod by posing as the Misfits, Sex Pistols and Nirvana in a new video. We're getting ready for the next Bouncing Souls record, and is that an Avoid One Thing cover in the track listing? Guests for the upcoming New York Dolls reunion record have been announced, and they include Iggy Pop, REM's Michael Stipe and Against Me!'s Tom Gabel. Rancid's returned from the wilderness with new acoustic videos (including an Operation Ivy cover) and news of a worldwide tour, upcoming DVD and their next record. Finally A Wilhelm Scream announced their new bassist as Brian Robinson of the Fullblast joined the acclaimed group.

This week we spoke with Bellingham, WA's Shook Ones. Check it out. We also exclusively streamed a number of songs from the new Against All Authority album.

April 9th, 2006

It's Sunday April 9th, 2006. …sigh. There was no joke. That was the joke. The stuff about us planning it for 8 months was just bullshit and somehow people managed to buy THAT aspect of the story more than anything. When the prank became so expected we just couldn't figure out a way to give it the appropriate element of surprise, so instead we went for the reverse-time-warp-nonprank and had you all second guessing everything we've said for the past few weeks. Considering the amount of email and instant messages we've received with people's "theories" (and some of you went back 8 months in stories to look for clues) I think we were at least successful in screwing with your heads a bit. On that level we're quite pleased. Granted, outright lying to you isn't very much of a prank, but we're jerks like that. At least I am. No lie.

Stories you were talking about this week

Propagandhi can't really do anything without causing some sort of fervour, putting out an double-LP of Potemkin City Limits included. More difficult news for Suburban Legends fans, as the prime suspect in the Ryan "Dallas" Cook hit and run fled to Korea. Angels and Airwaves continue the build up to their debut full length with the release of the video for "The Adventure." The seasonal explosion of Dead Kennedys verbal sparring has arrived, as the active band responded to Jello's recent comments. Epitaph new school act From First to Last were recently called up to the majors with their signing to Capitol. For the second time in recent memory a Clash fan in the U.K. caused a terrorism scare due to their good taste in music. Other big stories this week included news of Dashboard Confessional's upcoming record, a comprehensive history of NOFX, Lagwagon's upcoming tour dates and a planned Sublime tribute DVD.

This week we treated you to new interviews with Whole Wheat Bread and the Appleseed Cast. We also continued in our series of archival interview spotlights with features on Fugazi, At The Drive-In and the Misfits.

It's Sunday April 2nd, 2006. We didn't think we could pull it off. We didn't think we could avoid the obvious legal pitfalls it introduced. However we succeeded this weekend with an April Fools joke so complete, so subtle, and so perfectly crafted that it not only flew above your heads but the dimmer of you were completely oblivious. We started working on this one nearly 8 months ago and it nearly tore the editorial staff apart, but it worked. Those of you who wrote in that you figured it out on Saturday, we'll be sending you a Punknews t-shirt and a copy of the new Ryan's Hope CD. Those of you that missed it, look closer…

Paul McCartney and Brigitte Bardot battling sealers in the ice flows of Atlantic Canada? That, my friends, is the conflict of the day. There's something about international celebrities fighting blue collar hunters over the lives of fuzzy white pinnipeds that's just too surreal.
